Modern Leadership in a Historical City!

New Bern, NC - Thea Kincaid had a relaxing, one-on-one conversation with Lee Bettis about living in New Bern.

Before now, Thea had only met Lee during brief encounters around town. Today was different, she got to know more about him and hopefully you will too! The purpose was to get to know Mayor Lee Bettis, minus the politics!

Since a young age, Lee has been coming to Ocracoke in Eastern North Carolina. After 9/11, he moved to New Bern from NY, as it was the “closest place to Ocracoke to make a sustainable living”. He’s always considered Eastern NC “Home”.

When Thea asked him, “What inspired you to run for the Mayor of New Bern?” He replied, “The people of New Bern”. He noticed issues that needed to be addressed and has been working to resolve problems ever since. Lee has spent many years working in government and wanted to provide community service.

Another question, “Tell me what your biggest challenge has been since you moved here?” He responded, “Fitting in”. Lee described New Bern as the quintessential melting pot - Thea joked that he needs to become “Southernized”!

Lee’s passion is spending free time with his family and dogs on the water. Did you know he’s an artist, singer, and guitar player?
