TRU Celebrates 16th Annual Kick Butts Day

Havelock, NC – Wednesday March 23 is Kick Butts Day, and TRU members in Craven County hope to encourage teens to be tobacco-free so they can have longer and healthier lives.

TRU (Tobacco.Reality.Unfiltered) is the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund’s initiative that includes both the state’s youth movement and the powerful TRU media campaigns working to dissuade youth from using tobacco.

“You may not know that tobacco-related illnesses are the number one cause of death in our state,” said Gerald Nesmith, Jr. a 7th grader at Gover C. Fields Middle School. “It’s our hope to change that by creating North Carolina’s first tobacco-free generation.”

TRU members, Craven County Health Department, and bob 93.3 will be at the Havelock Boys and Girls Club from 3-5 to educate the community about the dangers of tobacco use.

“Tobacco-related illness and death impact every community and population in North Carolina,” said Kenya Servia. “We in the TRU movement will not rest until teens from every group in our community have taken the online pledge and are ready to stand strong and tobacco-free.”

For tobacco users who want to quit, free quit coaching is available toll-free from QuitlineNC at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) every day from 8 a.m. until 3 a.m. in English, Spanish, and many other languages.
