City of New Bern’s Leaders, Business Owners, and Residents gathered at Union Point Park yesterday morning to celebrate Earth Day’s 40 year Anniversary. New Bern’s Earth Week kicked off at Union Point on Monday for the “Less Means More” three day educational event.
Linda Staunch, Chairman of New Bern’s 300th Anniversary Committee, welcomed visitors and award recipients and introduced Craven County Commissioner, Johnnie Sampson. He delivered the Craven County Proclamation. He encouraged all Craven County residents to join in the challenges and take pride in preserving our natural resources.
The City of New Bern’s Mayor Lee Bettis delivered the Proclamation of Arbor Day, April 30, 2010. He encouraged residents and businesses to plant and protect our trees. Planting trees can increase property values, improve air quality, conserve water and energy, reduce soil erosion, and provide shade.
Kevin Roberts, President of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, thanked Tim McClear and Rodger Whitney for their efforts with Green Craven.org. He presented Green Business Awards to Julia Mielish and Tanya McGhee of Craven Community College’s Green Team, Amy Wang of Ward and Smith, and David Wang of The Epiphany School.
Rusty Hayes, Superintendent of Craven County Water and Sewer, explained the definition of “Less Means More” - less water now, means there will be more water in the years to come. He provided a summary of this week’s three day educational water conservation event. He proceeded to present Ricky Tucker and Chuck Dale of BSH Home Appliances with the 2010 Award of Merit for Corporate Conservation.
Officer Riggs of the NC Division of Forestry presented the 14th Year Award from Tree City USA to Mayor Bettis along with a flag, stickers, hat, pin, and other items.
Prior to the ceremony, Justy Hayes told me that the “Less Means More” Committee is hosting a poster contest for 5th graders coming up in the Fall. The winners will receive monetary awards to be presented to them at their school. The committee intends to extend the message to High School and Middle School students with an essay contest. I asked why the “Less Means More” water conservation initiative targets 5th graders. Linda Staunch responded it’s because the events coincide with their curriculum as they learn about Earth Science.
