Today was my first trip to the Twin Rivers YMCA and I was very impressed! Board Member, Volunteer, and Owner of the UPS Store Pat Drake, told me about the special Water Safety Program and I had to see for myself.
Every year, the YMCA provides free water safety training to 3rd and 4th graders in Craven County. The kids were excited to get in the water!
Special thanks to Board Member, Volunteer, and State Farm Agent Tom Gingrich for taking a couple of minutes out of this busy day to tell us about this unique program. He emphasized, with water all around us, "it is very important that all our students have the opportunity to get their feet wet so to speak".
Pat Drake also told me that the students learn swim lessons, safe reach and throw techniques (so they don’t get in the water to save someone), and a lifejacket program.
Besides offering this water safety program, the Twin Rivers YMCA also provides swim lessons, and water safety to groups of children such as the Girl and Boy Scout Troops.
I would also like to thank President Todd Shuart, Aquatics Director Susan Decker and all the hardworking board members, staff and volunteers.
They are always looking for volunteers! For more information about the Twin Rivers YMCA, please call them at 252-638-8799, visit them at 100 YMCA Lane in New Bern, or check out their website!
