“Unifying Our Community” – New Bern’s First-Ever Cultural Festival to bring all “Walks of Life” together!

This morning, New Bern's Citizens and Leaders joined forces at City Hall to take the first step in “Unifying our Community”. The New Bern Young Marine Color Guard presented colors as Susan Maebie sang the National Anthem.

Guest Speaker, Reverend Johnson of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, clarified the reason for the All American Inclusive Family (AAMIFAM) Festival. This weekend not only celebrates New Bern’s 300th Anniversary, but the festival was established to celebrate diversity among us. His words inspired us to “pull down the walls and build bridges to unite Uptown and Downtown as we march in unity”. He emphasized the importance of “mending and restoring broken relationships and working together to make a difference in our community”.

As we marched (a lot of people holding hands) from New Bern’s City Hall to the corner of Broad and First Streets, we were a group from all walks of life. The ranks composed of a NC State Representative, a Retired Major General, City Alderman and Alderwoman, a Craven County Commissioner, 300th Committee Leaders, Chamber of Commerce President, white and blue collar workers, homemakers, African American, Caucasian, etc. We were "All American Inclusive Family Members". We marched with one goal in mind, to make a point! New Bern doesn’t have to be divided by social classes, race, or other social dividers. It’s about time we embrace our differences and change with the times to make our City a better place to live for all.

At 11:00am, Emcee Monica Dowd introduced guest speakers NC Representative Alice Underhill, AAMIFAM Organizer Van Cuthbertson, and Dr. Steven Fitzgerald of First Baptist Church. The 300th Oath was read and everyone was asked to take the time to greet each other.

Please take some time out of your weekend, even if it’s for an hour or two and learn about other cultures. The festival continues with food and other vendors, non-profit organizations, and amusements at the corner of First and Broad Streets. There’s plenty of parking available and there’s a large tent set up to shade you from the heat!

For pictures taken today, please visit New Bern Now's Photo Gallery.

For more information about tomorrow’s events and AAMIFAM Festival’s mission, please visit their website.

Thank you, Van and all who were involved in coordinating the AAMIFAM Festival and for those who came out in support of their efforts!

Some say, “It takes a village”. We have to start somewhere and I believe this festival was the first step in bringing the best of all of us together!

Ribeyes Steakhouse of New Bern – Now Open!

I enjoyed a tasty lunch with friends today at Ribeyes Steakhouse. It’s a MUST visit in my opinion.

Here’s a couple of inside photos if you haven’t been there and wonder what it looks like. Details about Ribeyes Steakhouse will follow in the near future.

The following information provided by Ribeyes: "Ribeyes Inc. is pleased to announce the July 2010 opening of the newest Ribeyes Steakhouse in New Bern, NC at 313 Pollock Street.

“We couldn’t be happier to be in the great city of New Bern and we look forward to ensuring everyone who visits has a unique and satisfying dining experience,” said Jeff Ellis, Co-Owner of the New Bern location.

The success of Ribeyes Steakhouse comes because they only serve choice, mid-western, grain-fed beef from Omaha Steaks-- the finest money can buy. More specifically, the rib eye is cut from only Angus beef cattle, which are bred for superior marbling and texture. All Ribeyes Steakhouse beef is aged for 21 days for tenderness and is shipped fresh, never frozen. Finally, each cut is trimmed of excess fat prior to grilling. All of this attention to detail makes for a superb, quality cut of meat.

The Ribeyes Steakhouse menu consists of rib eye steaks; grilled, boneless chicken breasts; grilled shrimp; grilled pork chops; grilled tuna or salmon; steamed vegetables, and baked potatoes or sweet potatoes, served with an endless, made-fresh-daily salad bar and Texas toast. Ribeyes Steakhouse keeps it simple, consistent and delicious for you. A children’s menu is available and in keeping with the Ribeyes concept of quality, healthy, grilled selections, offers grilled chicken fingers, grilled shrimp bites and grilled cheese sandwich. All children’s plates are served with potato crisps, Texas toast and a pickle spear.

Along with the tantalizing food, Ribeyes Steakhouse takes pride in the level of service that is given graciously to each and every customer.

“No doubt the quality of product we use is far above most, but add in the great care we take in pleasing each of our customers and why would you eat anywhere other than Ribeyes Steakhouse,” said Ellis. “We enjoy your business and we work hard to keep it. Ribeyes Steakhouse keeps the menu simple and offers each customer the very best in food, service, price and atmosphere.”

As is the Ribeyes Steakhouse dinner concept, customers will be greeted and seated by either a hostess or waitperson. At this point drink orders are taken and the waitperson lets guests know that the cook will be out to take the food orders. Ribeyes Steakhouse cooks actually come out from behind the grill to take the food orders to ensure all meals are cooked to customers’ specific requests.

“We pay attention to detail and we want customers to get the entrĂ©e they wanted and a meal they will talk to their friends about so it is key that our cooks go out at dinner and take the food orders,” said Roger Kearney, Director of Operations of Ribeyes, Inc. “I believe New Bern residents will appreciate this added touch.”

The main dining room at Ribeyes of New Bern will seat 50 with an additional 16 ‘great view seats’ on the mezzanine. The location is open for lunch from 11am-2:30pm seven days a week. Dinner hours follow: 5pm-9pm Monday through Thursday, 5pm-9:30pm Friday and Saturday and 5pm-8pm on Sunday.

All Ribeyes Steakhouses have a private dining room known as The Angus Room that is perfect for special occasions, meetings or seminars. New Bern’s Angus Room will comfortably seat 45 people.

Ribeyes, Inc. is located in Snow Hill, NC and opened its first location there in April 2003. Since then, the ever-growing company has added seven locations in eastern North Carolina --Williamston, Beaufort, Cape Carteret, Clinton, Louisburg, Nashville and New Bern – and will open its ninth location in Henderson, NC in September 2010. All locations are franchised operations with the exception of Williamston, which is company owned.

For franchise information please contact Horace Liles at 252-747-5246 Ext. 26 or via email" - submitted by: Ms. Gabriel Baker, Marketing Consultant, Ribeyes, Inc.

Please visit them at 313 Pollock Street, Downtown New Bern, 252-288-5814

Special thanks to co-owner Rob Payne for the grand tour and Erin for friendly and attentive service.

Transportation Security Administration Expands Explosives Detection Capability at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport

Above photo: Airport Executive Director Tom Braaten receiving Annual Homeland Security Award from TSA Federal Security Director Michael Zunk.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced the deployment of a new explosives detection system machine for screening checked baggage at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport.

“This new machine will help us screen checked baggage more quickly and efficiently,” said Michael Zunk, TSA federal security director. “We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of airport executive director Tom Braaten and his staff in bringing this security enhancement to Coastal Carolina Regional Airport.”

Through CT scan technology and sophisticated algorithms, explosives detection system machines can quickly determine if a bag contains a potential threat. If a weapon or potential explosive is detected, the machines alert transportation security officers so they can manage the bag appropriately.

Prior to the deployment of this equipment, TSA officers had to swab each bag to screen it for explosives. The new machine is fully automated, eliminating the need to swab each bag and reducing the number of bags that have to be opened.

“This new technology provides a win-win for the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport,” said Tom Braaten, Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Director. “It will help us provide safety and better service to our increasing number of passengers, and they will have the convenience of giving their luggage to the air carrier and not handling it again until they reach their final destination.

As of June 2010, TSA has deployed 383 reduced-sized explosives detection system machines at a total of 153 airports. The machines cost approximately $340,000 and are smaller than other explosives detection system machines currently in use at many commercial airports nationwide.

The machine at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport was purchased with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. In September 2009, TSA announced that it was purchasing reduced-size explosives detection system equipment using approximately $30 million in ARRA funds.

Spotlight on Boston at the Bend – River Bend That Is!

UPDATE: Boston at the Bend Closed in June, 2011
George and Ann Travis, owners of Boston at the Bend and Boston Deli, shed a new light on New Bern area restaurants!

I met friends for lunch at Boston at the Bend today and was very impressed with a fun and tasty experience, especially since I’ve never been there before.

Walking in, I was greeted by the friendly, speedy, and attentive staff. George Travis was on scene chatting with customers and delivering food during their busy lunch time.

The restaurant is strategically located on the river with a large dining patio and outdoor stage. Inside you can relax in a nautically decorated dining area with a welcoming and calming atmosphere. Rent one of their two catering rooms or reserve the deck on a limited basis.

Boston at the Bend caters to all! They provide delicious food and drinks at affordable prices. Their team offers food and drink specials.

If you just want to relax and take a break to talk to friends, stop in for a drink at their bar.

Tom and Delilah provide live music and Karaoke on the Deck on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 6pm.

George believes in the “Everybody is somebody customer service approach.” George jokes with patrons. He tells first time visitors they are customers and if they come back again, they are part of the family. He is proud to have customers who support their efforts. He strives to provide quick service, great food, and a fun and friendly atmosphere. Talking with George motivated me to write this blog. He is a man who just wants to help his community and have some fun. To me, that’s what life is all about.

Did I mention that they provide outside catering services?

For a unique and enjoyable dining experience, please visit Boston at the Bend located at 1 Marina Road in River Bend. Please call them for more information at 252-636-1658. George and Ann also own Boston Deli located at 309 Middle Street, 252-633-4899.

New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce - Message to our Community

From the desk of “Guest Blogger” - Darlene Brown:

When I first moved to New Bern, I came up with a new tag line for the Chamber: Any community worth living in is worth supporting. I truly believe this is true. Whether or not you chose to live in New Bern or are New Bernian by birth, let’s face it, we’ve got it going on!

Chamber President, Kevin Roberts, likes to say that when you join the Chamber, we don’t load up a bunch of customers in our cars and drop them off at your business. What we do is give you the opportunity to meet people at our sponsored events such as the Business Expo, Administrative Professionals’ Day, the Annual Banquet, Speed networking, Business Before Hours, Business After Hours, etc. To that end, the business world is all about who you know. That's why our events, particularly the Chamber's Business After Hours and Business Before Hours, are such a valuable tool to help expand your professional network, share resources, and improve your business savvy.

Chamber events are the perfect opportunities for you, or someone at your company, to make relevant contacts and gather ideas. Chamber members use Chamber events to build relationships, discuss challenges, mentor one another, and help each other become more effective in providing solutions to their business’s needs.

It must be understood that the Chamber is people. There is a place in the Chamber efforts for all who share the desire to improve the community and the conditions under which business is conducted. It directs the energies of those who believe in their community. A Chamber enables these people to accomplish collectively what no one could do individually. It strengths lies in attracting the greatest number of individuals and firms into membership, thereby creating a pool of resources.

And remember, any community worth living in is worth supporting! We thank you for your support of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce.

For more information about the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, please contact Darlene Brown, Director, Marketing & Communications, at 316 S. Front Street, call 252-637-3111, or visit their facebook page.

Thanks for becoming a Guest Blogger, Darlene!

Seniors Choosing to Live at Home - Chamber Ribbon Cutting Ceremony!

It was a full house for Seniors Choosing to Live at Home Chamber Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this afternoon! Today's Ribbon Cutting was special as Kevin Roberts, President of the New Bern Area Chamber and Beth Bucksot, Vice President of the Pamlico County Chamber of Commerce united to celebrate the Open House.

Valerie and Rod Phillips established Seniors Choosing to Live at Home in 2006. After working in the health and home care industry for many years, they decided to create a business that caters to senior citizens who live at home.

Some may compare Seniors Choosing to Live at Home services to those provided by adult children who take care of their parents. Therefore, Valerie and Rod consider themselves and their employees as “surrogate children” in that respect.

They offer in home care services so seniors can live independently vs. moving into an independent living, assisted living, or nursing home facility.

Potential employees for Seniors Choosing to Live at Home are personally interviewed by Valerie. They are screened with a security background check, interview, and receive extensive training prior to becoming part of the team.

A full time nurse is available to assist with prescription routines, counseling, and numerous other nursing tasks.

Licensed by the state of North Carolina, safety is one of their top priorities and they will outfit homes to ensure a safe, comfortable, and secure living environment.

Benefits to contracting with Seniors Choosing to Live at Home are:

- Clients can opt to receive around the clock personal care to include: cooking, personal hygiene, house cleaning, shopping, transportation, home maintenance, managing bills, dog walking, etc.

- Clients and family members receive counseling if the situation warrants choosing a proper facility for a client if they can no longer live at home.

- They offer quality care at affordable prices. They only require one hour minimums vs. higher minimums required by some home healthcare agencies.

For more information about Seniors Choosing to Live at Home, please visit them at 2916 Trent Rd (next to Mount Olive College), New Bern or call 252-633-2514. Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:30pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm.

Thanks for the tour, Valerie!

Tabernacle Preschool - A Foundation for Learning...A Foundation for Life

Tabernacle Preschool is a ministry of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Tabernacle Preschool is located at the corner of Broad and George Streets in beautiful downtown New Bern. It was created to provide a loving, Christian environment for preschoolers to explore their world, to socialize with their peers, and to establish a strong foundation for learning. We offer a faith-based preschool program for children ages 2-4. Our program offers 2 and 3 day a week classes for ages 2 and 3, and offers a 3 and 5 day a week program for 4 year olds.

Activities at the preschool include weekly chapel time, visits to the local library, field trips, center time, circle time, art projects, and outside play. Each week the children are exposed to various themes such as seasons, colors, shapes, and community workers with a connection to Bible stories and Bible verses. We use the WEE Learn and Scripture Bites Curricula. Both are Christian curricula and provide a wide variety of activities to engage each child. Each teacher also supplements these with her own experience and research that are age appropriate and consistent with scriptural foundations.

Classes begin on September 7, 2010. For more information about Tabernacle Preschool check out our website or connect with us on facebook. For registration information or if you would like to come have a look around contact the preschool director, Susan Williams, at 252-636-0680 or email her.

This is the third play in the Futrelle Family Texas Trilogy that began with "Dearly Beloved" and continued with "Christmas Belles". A laugh-out-loud farce and a stand-alone play in its own right.

The Futrelle Sisters -- Frankie, Twink, Honey Rae and Rhonda Lynn -- are in trouble again. Their beloved hometown, Fayro, Texas is in danger of disappearing and it's up to the sisters to save it from extinction. In order to impress "Senora Caliente" to move her salsa factory to Fayro, the girls plan, "Fayro Days" with a reenactment of a Civil War battle with only fifteen participants. Add to this Twink's desperation to get married, Dub, Frankie's husband, is having a mid-life crisis while their twins are tearing up the town and the "meanest woman in twelve counties", Dub's Aunt Iney comes to visit. It's all a recipe for total hilarity.

A Community Watch Chairperson will talk about their neighborhood experience. At 8:00 p.m. there will be a flashlight walk through the downtown streets as a symbolic gesture for citizens to shine a light and express a stand against crime. For those not able to attend, resident are encouraged to turn on your porch lights at 8:30 pm.

National Night Out (NNO) has been held annually in communities around the United States since 1984 sponsored by National Association of Town Watch (NATW). Last year participation had grown to involve 36.7 million people in 14,625 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military basis worldwide. Gearing Up for a Parade Like No Other

With two months until New Bern’s Jubilee Weekend scheduled for September 16-19, the 300th Celebration Parade Committee is in full swing. Organizers are currently looking for volunteers to help with planning as well as with parade day activities. The committee is thrilled about what this parade will mean for the city.

“We have asked representatives from all over North Carolina to participate in the grand event,” said Sabrina Bengel, co-chair of the committee. Bengel, along with Greg Smith of Mitchell’s Hardware, has been working tirelessly to assemble a team of volunteers to help plan New Bern’s “Parade of a Lifetime.”

The City of New Bern is most closely tied with the Swiss, but our heritage has been influenced by many different cultures, events and individuals. Jubilee Weekend is an opportunity to embrace our heritage and to learn more about our town. The Jubilee Heritage Parade will not only feature bands and marching units from across the state, but also a variety of floats, each with a theme that celebrates New Bern’s history. We are thrilled with the response from organizations, schools, churches marching units and bands that have already signed up to participate. It will really be a showcase that the entire City can embrace. Space is limited for additional floats, but it’s not too late to sign up.

“This is such a great and fun way to be a part of this once in a lifetime opportunity and we encourage businesses and individuals alike to join us,” said Smith. “It’s a unique way to honor a family member or local hero. The 300th Celebration’s website has a list of theme ideas to help get you started,” he added.

The Parade, which is a highlight of the festive weekend, is a prelude to the Cultural Festival that takes place later that same day. We anticipate many of the bands and entertainment that participate in the parade will also be a special part of the Cultural Festival. Spectators will have a chance to not only see and hear the entertainment, but can also talk with the participants to learn about their heritage.

If you would like to volunteer or participate in the parade or the Cultural Festival, check out the 300th Anniversary Committee website for more information, and an opportunity to get involved. Contact the 300th Parade Committee at 252-635-1710 for more information.

Spotlight on “A Day At The Farm”

Spending the morning at A Day At The Farm was fun-filled and educational!

Laura Johnson (with New Bern Now) and I joined Jasmine Sills, The Greenville Police Athletic League (PAL) Coordinator, Volunteers, and the PAL’s large group of children on this interesting tour.

Julia Bircher (co-owner with her sister, Melissa Barnette) met us with a warm welcome. Entering the farm, I noticed the well manicured grounds and realized how difficult it must be to tend to the animals, maintain the grounds, arrange tours, activities, and tend to business matters - especially in this HOT July weather!

Farming equipment has improved over the past 100 years, but it's still a very tough living! Farmers wake up at the crack of dawn to feed their animals and take care of daily activities until the sun goes down.

Before I visited the farm, I assumed it was a petting zoo. This is NOT true! Their goal “is to provide the younger generation with hands-on activities which encourage an appreciation of North Carolina culture and heritage” – A Day At The Farm.

Seven generations of the McCoy family have farmed this land since 1846 - 164 years! From 1947-1993 they were a Holstein dairy farm and also provided dairy products to the Maola Milk Company. They were the last dairy farm to close in the Eastern Carolina Region.

The history lesson is over; let’s talk about the fun and educational tour! For a moment, I felt like a kid again as I watched “Moses the Goat” tug on a pulley rope to raise a can full of treats to his level. What a smart animal!

Tour guide, Lydia Monette, led our group to the barnyard full of animals: potbellied pigs, goats, miniature horses, peacocks, guines, chickens, Tom the turkey, a 500+ pound domestic pig, and more. The kids were having a great time petting, feeding, and watching the animals! Especially the FREE kittens available to someone with a good home!

Then we entered the historical buildings open during the tour. The Ice Cream Parlor, Old Kitchen, Wash House, and Cow Barn display equipment and supplies they used in the olden days.

Laura and I skipped the hayride to admire the garden full of fresh herbs, vegetables, and flowers and converse with Julia under the shade of the enormous 100+ year old Oak Tree. Julia’s husband, Jack, took the PAL group on a hayride past a beaver dam, fox’s den, and a scenic tour along Grape Creek. Julia was waiting for the group to return to make butter and give them some ice cream to enjoy!

There’s much more to A Day At The Farm than I can relay through this article. They offer hayrides and tours. There’s a Pumpkin Fun Day on October 16th. Pick the family pumpkin during the month of October. This past Easter brought over 600 children during their three Easter Egg Hunts. They are open by appointment only, so please call them at 252-514-3033 to make sure they can accommodate your needs.

Rent the Pack House for birthday parties, family outings, community groups, scout troops, youth groups, retreats, corporate parties, and more! You can even get married at the farm! They have a loft for sleepovers of 25-30 children. They offer catering, a gas grill, bike rentals, picnic tables, and a bonfire pit is available. They even have a Gift Shop. They are closed from mid November thru the beginning of March.

Please visit their Website for more information. To view more photos, visit NBN's Photo Gallery.

If you haven’t visited A Day At The Farm, you don’t know what you’re missing! They are located at 183 Woodrow McCoy Road, Cove City, NC. It’s only a 13 minute drive from Hwy 70’s Clarks Road exit!

Special thanks to Julia, Jack, and Lydia for the entertaining and informational tour of A Day At The Farm!

Mad Tea Party in Concert

Mad Tea Party will be featured in concert for reopening night of Broad Street Music in New Bern, NC on Friday, August 13. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and the show begins at 9:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00. Broad Street Music is located at the Journey Cafe at 411 Broad Street in downtown New Bern, NC.

Mad Tea Party brews up rock 'n' roll, garage-pop and honky tonk to create a fresh and intoxicating sound. "It's B-52s meets Buddy Holly with a lot more thump." Musical conspirators Ami Worthen and Jason Krekel serve up an exciting live show to music lovers thirsty for upbeat, original refreshment. Delicious harmonies glide over electrified ukulele, juke-joint guitar, scratchy fiddle, and pulsing foot percussion. Catchy songs are steeped in raw rockabilly with shreds of doo wop and devilish blues. Drink deep - Mad Tea Party concocts a musical recipe that will make you boogie.

The band's dynamic show has been catching people's attention across the country. Metro Santa Cruz described it this way, "More a spectacle than a traditional two-person band, Mad Tea Party consists of vocalist and ukulele strummer Ami Worthen and guitarist, fiddler and drummer Jason Krekel. As Worthen reels out charming and quirky songs with an arch sense of humor, Krekel does double- and triple-duty, creating the illusion of a much bigger band with only two arms and two legs. It's a sight to behold...but Mad Tea Party's unique sound is just as worthy of note. A bubbly amalgam of juke-joint blues, pop, tiki exotica and rockabilly, the band has honed an approach that is unique and affecting without being too precious."

The duo toured throughout the southeast following the May 1 release of their debut album, Quiet Little Room, which earned critical acclaim and heavy airplay in the region. Independence Day Celebration with Guinness World Record Event in New Bern, NC!

The Fourth of July festivities kicked off in New Bern with Tommy Moore and his team creating a Guinness World Record - Largest Barbeque Bun. The bun weighed in at 1,336 pounds and fed more than 2,000 people!

NC Governor Beverly Perdue, NC Representative Alice Underhill, New Bern’s Mayor Lee Bettis, Thomas Jefferson (reenacted), Nelson McDaniel, and Linda Staunch, were some of New Bern’s notable figures to join in the festivities.

Tommy Moore and his crew worked vigorously as they topped the bun with barbeque and coleslaw to have it ready to serve the huge crowd.

After the Bun’s final measurements and weight was determined, Governor Perdue served the first BBQ plates to the US Marines and Sailors patiently waiting in line for this famous BBQ. Marines representing Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point were Lance Corporal (LCpl) Michael Barnett of Valdosta, GA; LCPL Danny Mata of Escondido, CA; Corporal (Cpl) Robert Thomas of Bridgeport, OH; Cpl George Warner of Buffalo, NY; Sergeant (Sgt) James Fairchild of Willspoint, TX; Sgt Carolos Cazares of Brooklyn, NY; and Staff Sergeant Patrick Shaw of Lanpassas, TX. Hospital Apprentice Brandon Whitey of Webberville, MI and Hospital Corpsman Third Class Adam Zani of Syracuse, NY represented Naval Health Clinic Cherry Point. Gunnery Sergeant Stephen Digirolamo represented Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

What a fantastic day for Moore’s Olde Tyme Barbeque and the people of New Bern during our 300th Anniversary Year! The Sailors and Marines were proud to be part of this historic event. It was truly an Independence Day that will go down in the history of New Bern, NC!

Congratulations, Tommy Moore, and his hard working team (family, friends, and employees) along with his Marketing and Public Relations Director, Betty Thomas, for accomplishing this tremendous feat!

Revitalizing Uptown New Bern - The New Thang Conference!

We can’t change time, but we can change our attitudes!

It’s no secret that Downtown New Bern is thriving and Uptown New Bern (Five Points, Duffeyfield, Trent Court, Craven Terrace) is in disrepair. Every time I drive thru the Uptown area, I wonder how I can help make a difference. People say things can only change if people want them to. I believe that and thank Van Cuthbertson for inviting me to the New Thang Conference Banquet at the JEB Ballroom in Five Points.

The New Thang Conference is a citywide revival formed by Uptown community leaders and members who care about their community and want to change! The banquet celebrated their drive and commitment to restore the Uptown area as the bustling and prosperous business district that it was years ago!

The vibrant and heartfelt atmosphere inspired me, especially seeing the large turnout of people during the extended Independence Day weekend. With so many activities going on, their loyalty to this terrific movement was obvious that they were there to find out how they can make a difference in the Uptown community.

Uptown’s leaders, members and family gathered to acknowledge and thank key players in their efforts to improve the community. Reverend Kareem Edwards acknowledged numerous churches, businesses, and individuals who made a difference in the 2010 New Thang Conference during Mothers Day weekend. The Conference was the beginning of something new. Focus points were restoring womanhood and understating Determined Individuals Vying for Achievement and Self-Respect (D.I.V.A.S). A community day was designated to bring everyone together and spread a message of hope on Mother’s Day.

Rev Edwards relayed the message that “we have to pull together, make sacrifices, and change the fiber of our community”. He noted that your life is worth living, we need to rejuvenate and take a stand against drugs, broken homes, and teen pregnancy. He described the need to develop partnerships to achieve the goal which will take commitment. He asked “what would you do to save our community”? He encouraged people to “believe in the vision”.

They introduced the Ethel Bell Sampson Heroism Award for lifetime commitment to improve the community.

Torane Williams spoke about “growing up with drug dealers on the streets who wouldn’t let you stop, they would tell you to go to the gym. Now they tell a young boy or girl to hold this” which eventually turns the child into a drug dealer.

New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis spoke about having Van Cuthbertson at his house for dinner. They talked about Five Points revitalization and community unity. They discussed how to get stakeholders in Duffyfield. After meeting with Van, the Mayor talked to his wife and decided he would open his own law firm at 1036 Broad Street. His wife is a marriage and family counselor and will offer free parenting classes.

Van Cuthbertson talked about New Bern’s First All American Inclusive Family Festival (aamifam Festival) which was developed to celebrate our culture and celebrate our differences between all races, bring all the differences in one field and learn how we can use each other’s differences to make our community stronger. The aamifam Festival was also created to learn about the history of each culture.

Van defined what it takes to be a stakeholder. “You don’t have to live here and if you live here, that doesn’t automatically make you a stakeholder.” A stakeholder is someone who cares about improving Craven Terrace, Duffyfield, Trent Court, and Five Points. “Change will come with sacrifice, time and pride. We are tax payers too – we’ll meet you at Five Points”.

The New Thang Conference can only achieve so much without financial donations. If you’d like to become a Platinum Partner, become a sponsor of the community for $240. You can make $20 monthly payments. Gold Partner sponsorship costs $120. They need financial support to move the vision forward. You can purchase a Mother’s Day CD for $10 donation. If you’re interested in becoming a stakeholder, please contact Rev Kareem Edwards at 757-945-0676 or send him an email.

Kareem asked members to redeem yourself. “We’re going to bring Five Points back. Downtown is going to want to come to Five Points”.

It was obvious to me that residents of Five Points, Duffyfield, Craven Terrace, and Trent Court communities welcome New Bern residents to join them in restoring their community.

It doesn’t matter what neighborhood you live in, we can make a difference, it all depends on if you want to change and make New Bern a more diverse and better city for everyone!

Happy Independence Day Weekend!

I spent most of today driving around town, from Trent Woods, James City to Downtown New Bern and people are out in droves! I asked many visitors what their plans were and they told me they are here to celebrate the weekend activities throughout the Greater New Bern Area.

There are two large reunions, this weekend. James City Day - Homecoming Reunion (July 2nd-4th) and West Street Elementary and JT Barber High School Reunion (July 2nd-5th).

Did you know that New Bern was the first town in North Carolina to Celebrate Independence Day in 1778? The “Road to Independence” will reflect on New Bern’s historical journey. It is filled with exciting activities that will take place Downtown New Bern. Please visit the 300th Anniversary website for a detailed schedule of events.

Local businesses and streets are decorated with the "Red, White, and Blue"! Don't forget to fly your flag this weekend and reflect on why we celebrate "Independence Day". If it wasn't for our forefathers, we would not have the liberties that we may take for granted today!

A shuttle will transport passengers from Lawson Creek Park to the Union Point Park area on Sunday, July 4th beginning at 4:15pm and will run in 45 minute intervals.

Some business owners will be open later in the evening to accomodate visitors needs. Call them ahead of time to see if they will be open.

I wish everyone a safe and wonderful Independence Day Weekend!
