After seeing Nina Randone’s work as the designer of the Coastal Women’s Forum newsletter and administrator of the Facebook page and hearing about Nina around town, I finally had the opportunity to meet this talented and civic minded graphic designer in person!
Nina is a creative graphic designer who earned her degree at Savannah College of Art and Design and is an award winning print designer!
As an experienced business owner, she knows firsthand what it takes to promote your business!
If you’re a regular reader, I’m sure you’ve figured out that I don’t have an “eye for design”, but I do have tremendous respect for Nina’s artistic abilities. After seeing her portfolio, learning about her past work experience with large corporations to small businesses, and getting to know Nina, I highly recommend her artwork to others.
Nina provides a wide array of marketing and advertising materials to suit business needs. She designs print advertising, logos and branding materials, brochures, business cards, web design, proposal packages, stationery, social media graphics, direct mail, and much more!
On a side note, I’ve met many business owners who advertise locally but don't have access to a pdf file of their ads. Their ads are created by local media - newspaper, magazine, online venue, etc. Every time they pay to advertise with a different media platform, they usually pay for “design set-up” fees and the media company keeps the rights to that design. A simple solution: consult a graphic designer to create a couple of different advertisements and pay a one-time fee. The kicker - you will own the advertisement and can send it to whoever you choose to advertise with.
Enhance your company’s image TODAY by contacting Nina Randone!
View Nina’s graphic design portfolio on her website, visit her Facebook page, give her a call at 252-571-1999 and/or send her an email.
Thanks, Nina, for sharing your artwork and experiences with me. It was a pleasure meeting you and I look forward to working with you in the future!

Since NC Life Media Company (Citizen Media) recently took over operations of New Bern Now, I'm asking for local residents opinions and review of the April 2011 New Bern Now Ledger to make any corrections, additions, or suggestions before it goes to the printers for hardcopy distribution.
The sole purpose of converting New Bern Now to a "Citizen Media" company was to encourage readers to provide information on local events, happenings, causes, etc. Since NBN's inception, I'm happy to say, things have come "Full Circle". Without your input and guidance, I would've given up a LONG time ago!
Special thanks to everyone who submits information for publication to the blog, website, and newsletter!

The performing arts competition will begin on April 27 in New Bern.
Nearly 250 seniors have registered for the games this year. Linwood Johnson, NRSG Ambassador and participant, is training for the event. “I’m moving my training in-doors because of this spring pollen, says Johnson, so that gives me about one month to practice bowling and basketball.” Participants compete against others in the same age and gender categories in a variety of athletic events designed for individuals of various fitness levels. Athletic events include bowling, swimming, horseshoes, cycling, track and field, croquet, bocce, shuffleboard, miniature golf, and many others.
The Silver Arts Competition celebrates the arts and includes vocal, comedy, drama, dance and instrumentals categories. Other Silver Arts categories include Heritage Crafts such as basket weaving, quilting, and wood turning, Visual Arts such as drawing, painting, and photography, and Literary Arts such as poetry, short stories, and essays. Silver Arts is a significant part of the Senior Games program. It offers seniors a venue for celebrating their creative talents and inspires people of all ages to consider the life-long benefits of artistic expression.
Registration is due on Friday, March 25. The cost is $15 and includes a senior games t-shirt and two lunches. For more information or to register, contact Johanne Pryor, NRSG Coordinator, at 252-745-5252 or Billy Wilkes, Events Director, at Craven County Parks and Recreation, 252-636-6606. Every other year participants who qualify at the State Games may continue on to the National Senior Games. NCSG information, including sports rules, is available at www.ncseniorgames.org. NRSG is sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games and is sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Health and Adult Services.
New Bern, NC - At Tryon Palace, you can participate in a living history like no other — one that uniquely blends cutting-edge technology with the events, experiences and tools of centuries past. The opening of the North Carolina History Center in October 2010 revolutionizes visitor activities at the state’s premier historic site and sets a new standard for the museum experience.
In 2011, we are focusing our volunteer efforts on recruiting and training for the North Carolina History Center. This new gateway to the Palace is a contemporary museum and welcome center located on a six-acre remediated site just east of the Palace. The 60,000-square-foot facility features a regional history exhibition, an interactive family gallery, changing exhibit space and more. Many volunteers are needed to help greet tour groups, provide information and security in the galleries, assist visitors with the interactive exhibits, and help create an exciting and educational experience for children and adults alike.
On Tuesday, March 29, at 3:00 p.m., come join us at the Way Station auditorium, on the corner of George and Pollock Streets, for an open house to learn more about Tryon Palace, the North Carolina History Center and the Volunteer Interpreter Program.
If you decide this opportunity is the right fit for you, we ask that you attend a half-day workshop to get more in-depth training and information. This half-day training session, held Thursday, March 31 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the North Carolina History Center Small Orientation Theater, provides more in-depth information and training.
You do not need to sign up for these sessions in advance, but certainly feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like additional information.

The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Authority in partnership with the East Carolina University’s (ECU) School of Art and Design reveals student art sculptures!
Today’s “3rd Annual Art at the Airport” Event was an eye opener. I’ve seen the art sculptures at the Airport before, but had no idea of the story behind this interesting project.
This unique venture gives ECU students a chance to exhibit their art to 134,000 travelers to and from the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport each year.
The Airport Authority sends a jury to ECU each year to view models 10-12” tall of the student art sculptures. They choose seven pieces out of 15 to display outside the airport. This isn’t an easy process because they try to imagine what they would look like at a much larger scale and vote on the most appealing to widest variety of people who had a chance to look at it. - Summary: Maj Gen Tom Braaten, USMC, Ret
Meet the artists:
(from left to right: Tom Braaten, Colton Winchester, Kevin Poole, Samantha Woitovich, Jenny Reading, Jonathan Burger, and Phillip Winn)
- Colton Winchester: Elements of Flight - he combined the “four elements of flying which is weight, thrust, lift, and drag. Last year I focused mainly on weight and lift, but this year I wanted to incorporate all four of them”. Note: Colton has another piece from last year - Let Go.
- Kevin Poole: Imagination - “Idea of a kid imagining he can fly and he’s basically transforming into a plane”.
- Samantha Woitovich: Mystic Flight - “Inspired by the idea of an atmospheric perspective and by a plane taking flight and going up into the sky”.
- Jenny Reading: Flight of Feather - “Like a feather being swept off in the wind. Depending on how you look at it, it also could represent a bird or a shell”.
- Jonathan Burger: Landing Place - “Owl is wisdom, Delta is peace, Raven is meditation to make up various aspects of mankind. The tree is a place like an airport where we gather before a journey, a place to take off from and land as a stepping stone to a more permanent place where we nest”.
- Phillip Winn: Traverse - “The two forms were going to or coming from a destination. The round elements on the outside represent longitude and latitude and are made of foam based steel fabricated.
- Brandon Estep – was not present, but Tom Bratten described his piece, Glide “made out of cedar wood and which will age very nicely”.
The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Authority purchased two sculptures from last year - Abigail Cochran’s The Travelers Three (three dandelions) and Chase Key’s Up, Up and Away (paper airplane with pencils).
The sculptures are for sale to the public by contacting the artists.
Special thanks to the Craven County Master Gardener Volunteer Association for the work at the Sculpture Arts Garden.
Please contact the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport for more information at 252-638-8591, visit them at 200 Terminal Drive, New Bern, NC.

If you’ve seen the movie Pay it Forward, you know what the concept is about. If not, it’s a must see!
Paying it forward basically means making a difference in someone’s life by a simple act of kindness.
Food for thought: If each of us spent time on April 28th, 2011, volunteering for a cause, buying a poor family dinner, donating money to a foundation, visiting someone who doesn’t have family at an assisted living facility, etc., we could make a difference by enhancing the quality of life for people in our community!
New Bern, NC - There will be a meeting on Monday, March 28th at 7:30 pm to plan for a fundraiser for Aaron Smith. His mother is a free lance paralegal and his Dad works at Cherry Point. Churches, civic groups, businesses or individuals are invited to be involved. In February, while waiting for a stop light, a car ran into him. Aaron was almost killed in a motorcycle accident. He has one leg below the knee amputated. He was moved last week from Orlando Fla. Trauma Center to Pitt Memorial in Greenville to the Rehab Unit for Brain injury. Every day he is getting better.
The meeting will be held at Beech Grove United Methodist Church at 1037 Washington Post Rd., New Bern, NC.

Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina Celebrates Children’s Healthy Development
RALEIGH, NC - April is Child Abuse Prevention Month – a time when communities come together to celebrate children’s healthy development. Today’s children are tomorrow’s parents and workers, and North Carolina’s future prosperity relies on their healthy development and growth. Throughout the year, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCANC) encourages communities to play a role in making North Carolina a state that prioritizes children’s healthy development. When children have safe, nurturing relationships, their well-built brain architecture forms a sturdy foundation for future success. During April, PCANC and communities throughout the state are planting hundreds of pinwheels in recognition of these investments in programs and activities that strengthen families and prevent abuse before it occurs.
“The pinwheel is the new symbol of child abuse prevention. It represents the nurturing, happy childhoods all children deserve,” said Rosemarie Allen Ryan, PCANC President. “Pinwheel gardens remind us that we all have a role in helping the children in our community thrive. Whether we are a parent, a teacher, a coach, or a neighbor, children see what we do and it influences their development.”
Child Abuse Prevention Month activities aren’t confined to pinwheel gardens, though. PCANC is also encouraging parents to “discover the power of play.” PCANC offers tips for playing with children on its website and has created parent pages that can be downloaded and reprinted on the following topics: child-directed play, ways fathers can play with children, and the five things strong families have in common. The April 2011 parent pages are the latest in a series that address issues of concern to parents and offer tips and advice to assist parents in their parenting role. “Children who play with their parents have been shown to be more creative and have fewer behavior problems,” said Allen.
PCANC is the statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in all forms. Through evidence-based and promising family strengthening and parenting programs, public awareness, and professional education, PCANC works to ensure that every child has a healthy childhood and the opportunity to grow up to be a caring, contributing adult. For more information about PCANC and to learn more about pinwheel gardens and April activities in your community, contact Maureen McKeon, Director for Communications at mmckeon@preventchildabusenc.org or 919-256-6616.
Note: On March 8th, 2011, we met Rosemarie Allen Ryan and learned about PCANC's efforts. To learn more, please visit our previous blog post to see video and read more. At that time, the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center was the FIRST pinwheel garden in North Carolina! Visit the Convention Center to see the pinwhell garden which will be on display in April 2011. - Wendy Card

New Bern, NC - Great time had by all as Phil Buffa played the bagpipes and entertained diners at Boston at the Bend in River Bend today! What a fantastic St. Patrick’s Day meal, of course the special was corned beef and cabbage with vegetables and soda bread.
George Travis, owner of Boston at the Bend, was proud to announce a new dance floor, eclectic music (jazz, blues, country, and other music). Every Friday night Sam da Man entertains with karaoke and dance music.
To help the community, he’s lowered prices on the menu and is changing things up with a new audio system. They also extended their bar area 11 feet.
Boaters can take a break at Boston at the Bend by pulling into a free boat slip while you dine (10 boat slips available to patrons). Prefer to launch your boat? It only costs $5 per day and kayakers can launch for free.
Another highlight was talking with Phil Knight, local TV and Radio personality, as we all enjoyed good company, food, and music!

New Bern, NC - Thea Kincaid had a relaxing, one-on-one conversation with Lee Bettis about living in New Bern.
Before now, Thea had only met Lee during brief encounters around town. Today was different, she got to know more about him and hopefully you will too! The purpose was to get to know Mayor Lee Bettis, minus the politics!
Since a young age, Lee has been coming to Ocracoke in Eastern North Carolina. After 9/11, he moved to New Bern from NY, as it was the “closest place to Ocracoke to make a sustainable living”. He’s always considered Eastern NC “Home”.
When Thea asked him, “What inspired you to run for the Mayor of New Bern?” He replied, “The people of New Bern”. He noticed issues that needed to be addressed and has been working to resolve problems ever since. Lee has spent many years working in government and wanted to provide community service.
Another question, “Tell me what your biggest challenge has been since you moved here?” He responded, “Fitting in”. Lee described New Bern as the quintessential melting pot - Thea joked that he needs to become “Southernized”!
Lee’s passion is spending free time with his family and dogs on the water. Did you know he’s an artist, singer, and guitar player?
Visit Lee and his Executive Assistant, Megan Durocher, at his new Bettis Law Firm office located at 626 Hancock Street, New Bern, 252-649-1710, or visit his website.
Thanks, Lee, for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk about the man behind the Mayor! Great job, Thea!

New Bern, NC - Craven Smart Start and Child Care Resource and Referral, with the support of Garber United Methodist Preschool, will be sponsoring a free family concert and an early childhood conference later this month. Garber Preschool will host the conference and the family concert, both of which will be held in the Ministry Center of the Garber United Methodist Church, located at 4202 Country Club Road in Trent Woods.
The family concert will take place on Friday, March 25th beginning at 6:30pm. Letha Ricks, Schoolage Specialist for Craven Smart Start, says “the concert will be a night of interactive fun for parents and their children with “Dr.Jean”, as she’s known in educational circles. It will be upbeat and will offer many opportunities for parents to move, sing, listen, learn and laugh with their children. Although the focus of the program will be on birth to five, it can be adapted for older children.” Peggy Faulkenberry, Garber Preschool Director, encourages parents to take advantage of the concert. She says that “Dr. Jean will give parents useful tools which will enhance their children’s learning, all while making it fun for the children and their parents!” Dr. Jean’s CD’s will be available for purchase. The family concert is free, but parents will need to register by calling Child Care Resource and Referral at (252) 672- 5921. The deadline for registering is March 18th.
The “Rock, Rhyme, Write and Read Literacy Conference”, will be held on Saturday, March 26th from 9am - 2pm. The goal of this conference is to provide a day of quality training for child care providers, preschool teachers, More at Four teachers and kindergarten teachers. The fee for the conference is $20 and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and a participant bag. Attendees will receive five contact hours and have the option of receiving CEU credit through Craven Community College for an additional fee. The deadline to register is March 18, 2011.
Dr. Jean’s noteworthy educational career has spanned more than 40 years. She inspires teachers across the country with her engaging songs and creative activities that help make teaching and learning FUN. According to Ms. Ricks, “Many children in our community and their parents are familiar with her learning songs, especially Tooty-Ta. Dr. Jean has presented at conferences throughout the country, but this will be the first time that she has presented in our area. We are delighted, that with support from Garber Preschool, we can bring her to Craven County.”

As always, Bobbi Waters did an outstanding job teaching local residents about the “Benefits of Composting” at Pinecone Perennials.
Bobbi is the Planner and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Coastal Environmental Partnership (CEP) for Carteret, Craven, and Pamlico Counties.
Last year, Bobbi gave me the grand tour of CEP’s Tuscarora Landfill and I learned all about composting and wrote about it here. Buy it "Dirt Cheap" at $30 per ton or a minimum of $1! Where else can you get high quality compost for that amount of money...the best part - it's all recycled yard clippings!
I also had the opportunity to meet Wendy Graveman, co-owner of Pinecone Perennials, and learn more about this beautiful nursery. Wendy and Bob Graveman work year round in their greenhouses and farm in Ft. Barnwell to produce local plants, flowers, trees, and more.
Bobbi Waters explains the "Benefits of Composting" to local residents

I try not to get personal on this blog, but felt I needed to share my thoughts...at the least, I would feel better reminding people thatwe have thousands of service members in Japan.
Today’s 8.9 earthquake in Japan that triggered a catastrophic Tsunami in Japan and surrounding countries personally affected me and many local Eastern NC residents who have loved ones serving our country or friends living in Japan.
While living on a forward deployed US Navy Ship stationed in Sasebo, Japan for three years, I fell in love with the people of this docile country.
Life Before the Earthquake and Tsunami
I just wanted to let my shipmates, marines, and friends that are living in Japan know that I’m thinking of them and hope you are safe and sound.
If your loved ones are stationed and/or living in Japan, my heart goes out to you!
For those who want to help support our US military and the people affected by this tragedy, please visit: http://www.wral.com/weather/story/9258862 to learn how you can support relief efforts.
Please feel free to comment below or send me an email with your thoughts.

“You may not know that tobacco-related illnesses are the number one cause of death in our state,” said Gerald Nesmith, Jr. a 7th grader at Gover C. Fields Middle School. “It’s our hope to change that by creating North Carolina’s first tobacco-free generation.”

“Tobacco-related illness and death impact every community and population in North Carolina,” said Kenya Servia. “We in the TRU movement will not rest until teens from every group in our community have taken the online pledge and are ready to stand strong and tobacco-free.”
For tobacco users who want to quit, free quit coaching is available toll-free from QuitlineNC at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) every day from 8 a.m. until 3 a.m. in English, Spanish, and many other languages.

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ol’ boy”. Filled with hilarious repartee, sharp jabs and bantering, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which gives the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Leslie Geiter, President of the Colonial Capital Humane Society (CCHS), tells us about upcoming events, adoption information, and introduces us to 67 cats at their no-kill cat shelter.
We were a bit overwhelmed by the adorable cats waiting for people to adopt them. Anytime I hear there are that many animals in need of loving homes, it brings me down, but today wasn’t the case.
After getting over the initial shock of so many cats, we toured their indoor and new enclosed outdoor living facility and were very impressed to see they have a nice home while they wait adoption. They seemed to be having a blast playing with toys, each other, and climbing on structures built by the wonderful volunteer force behind the CCHS.
The CCHS has many upcoming events to include the upcoming adopt-a-thon (Mar 12), Open House (Mar 26), BBQ Chicken fundraiser (Apr 15), Pet Expo booth (Apr 16), and Fur Ball (Apr 16) please click here for detailed information.
The no-kill cat shelter is cleaned and maintained by dedicated and hard working volunteers. The cats are fed, given clean water, litter boxes changed, and the shelter is mopped twice a day. They are always looking for volunteers.
Please visit the CCHS website to see photos and descriptions of the pets and fill out an application for adoption. For more information, please visit their website, call them at 252-633-0146, or send them an email.
Thank you, Leslie, for all you and the CCHS volunteers do for our community’s furry friends! Great job, Thea Kincaid!

It was a beautiful day as we sat at the location of the future “Spider Lily Sculpture” with Susan Moffat-Thomas. Susan updated us on the progress of the Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation’s “Spider Lily Sculpture” project.
Susan explained that Dr. Jim Congleton, the financial donor of this masterpiece, wanted to give a special gift to the city in remembrance of New Bern’s 300th Anniversary.
During a walk in September, Dr. Congleton passed the spider lily flowers in bloom and was inspired by their rich history in New Bern. Navy Captain William Roberts visited Japan in the 1800’s and returned with a few spider lily bulbs that he gave to his family. The bulbs were transplanted in New Bern and have been known as the “heirloom plant” of the South (reference).
Dr. Congleton commissioned renowned artist, Susan Pascal Beran, to create the sculpture. Susan is a distinguished artist whose masterpieces are on display in cities across the country to include the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
Residents and visitors will have the opportunity to meet Susan Pascal Beran, tentatively scheduled for April 17, 2011, at the Spider Lily Sculpture’s location on the Riverwalk behind the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.
Susan recognized and thanked members of the Swiss Bear’s Sculpture Committee “Let’s Put it in Stone” campaign: Leigh Wilkinson, Thea Kincaid, Beth Atkins, Judy Avery, John Ward, Shannon LuQuire, and Danielle Glynn.
Special thanks to Susan Moffat-Thomas, Swiss Bear’s Executive Director, and Thea Kincaid, the voice of New Bern Now for the special interview!
Please visit the Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation’s website for specific details about this one-of-a-kind project and to learn more about Swiss Bear’s history, current initiatives, and wonderful accomplishments they’ve spearheaded for our great city! Please call them at 252-638-5781 with any questions.
New Bern, NC - Local TV and Radio Personality, Phil Knight, shares his thoughts about our community, city, and the Phil Knight Show (above video).

Phil and Joan are avid boaters and love the water, the friendly people of New Bern, and the central location for travelers on the East Coast.
Two years later, Phil started his TV and Radio show on CTV 10 and WNBU 94.1. The show airs Monday thru Friday and is also available on the Internet. Phil is a strong community supporter and enjoys talking about good things happening with local non-profit groups.
Special thanks to Phil Knight, Thea Kincaid, the voice and personality of New Bern Now, and the friendly folks at Kitchen on the Trent which happens to be one of Phil and Thea’s favorite restaurants in New Bern.
